1940: Had horrid sardines for breakfast and they revolted during Scripture and I passed out. Mrs. P dosed me with Brandy and I recovered, but felt shaky all day. ------
1941: Dull. Went to Sussex Rd and saw Turner and Dora, They're just the same and don't advise me to try for the music job - I don't want it there in any case! Down town with Ma in evening. We're getting on famously - for the time being! ------
1942: Helped move B [Beryl] and then washed my hair. T'was the Tanner's End Mission display and our girls did very well. I was relieved, the dance went perfectly - for the 1st time! We were speechified and presented with diaries. I went to sup with Hilda who isn't very well really. Played Bridge. ------
1943: H [Hilda] turned up for tea - I was rather disappointed as I'd prefer her for supper! We strolled thro' park and round by Grange Park. Had about 10 mins for tea then went to church, plus Claudia. Walked into Enfield after and had a drink at The Town. Didn't enjoy it much. ------
1944: Played hockey after school. B and I to orchestra, altho' Fox Lane is now inhabited by another family - musical, so we had a flute and clarinet too. Firewatched - doodle in the middle of the night.

1940: Friday again, hurrah hurrah. Bade an unloving farewell to Turner, hope she enjoys teaching in Worthing. ------
1941: Boiling hot. Went to town and met Marjorie for the day. She's still the same - enthusiastic and ardent. Walked thro' Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens to Albert Hall. Heard choral performance of 'Hiawatha' - Elsie Suddaby, R. Henderson and Henry Wendon - enjoyed it very much. Nice seeing M again. ------
1942: Hilda came to tea at long last, therefore great happiness on my part. We went to the Alexandra Palace by bus, and explored grounds as I'd not been before. Sat in firelight after supper and listened to Mozart and Bach. Really talked after - religion and then politics. Such communion gives me perfect joy. I wonder if she is happy too. Rare moments are the more valuable. ------
1943: Usual Monday. P.T. [physical training] in evening. ------
1944: Exerted my authority and we had an orderly and disciplined choral class. Hockey again. Worked slightly in evening and made some very nice choc.
