1940: Mucked about in morning, singing and acting and playing. Ditto in afternoon and I took country dancing - not very successful. Finished tennis tournament - we tied 4th, had some quite good games. ------
1941: Spent most of day doing the P.T. [physical training] table - it looks a little more ship-shape now. Also dancing and agilities. Played tennis after C.D. [country dancing], and won 3 and lost 2 matches. ------
1942: Today passed quieter than I expected. Slept in afternoon. Beryl came to supper and we played and I practised the fiddle. 'Tis much better with an accompanist. ------
1943: Didn't exert myself much! Had tea at Empire with Marjorie and B and then went to Nottingham. Enid met me and the relations seemed pleased to see me. Played Bridge. ------
1944: Well, it's come to it. We had super row no.1 in afternoon over whether I should make anything for tea or not. Tears on both sides and Ma and I said what we thought of each other. My God, what a home I've got - why it's never happy I don't know.

1940: Dull and drizzly. Made jigsaw puzzles at school and did my record book for a bit in afternoon. The Prowses took us in the car to Culmstock Beacon - great fun. They are very jolly. ------
1941: Not a very nice day. Mucked about with team games, etc. Played tennis with Eric. ------
1942: Down town with Pa in morning - quite fun. He's got over yesterday's sulks. Were going to play tennis but it rained, so Beryl, Dora, Margaret Leadbetter and I went to Tea-dance. I left early to meet family at Odeon, but they had gone in, so I came home. ------
1943: Enid and I went for a walk in between the showers in morning. Had late lunch and mended cardigan in afternoon. Caught 7:15 back and waited ages at Trent. Went to College concert and Clubroom - very amusing. ------
1944: Somewhat strained atmosphere - both obviously endeavouring to keep the peace. Went to tennis tournament at Beach House and had to play Dora in the singles and of course lost. Some good play there.
