1940: B [Beryl] in an awful depressed mood all day and wouldn't do anything, so I betook myself for a lonely cycle ride in afternoon up Pencross [View] and down by Whitehall and lay in a field in the sun. Went to church in evening - uninspired. ------
1941: M.J.F. collared me when I was taking P.T. [physical training] and gassed for ages on nothing. Asked her to coffee, but she insisted on having the 3 of us to tea, so we went! Gassed for ages - from 4-9 - ! She was quite sweet and I don't think any of us will have to return. ------
1942: B and I cycled to Roydon near Ware after school in quest of a gramophone. When we arrived it had been sold, but in Broxbourne, on way back and saw another 2nd hand one for £2.10 so I bought it! Oh boy! At long last. Wish I had some records! ------
1943: Haven't done much teaching this week. I went to tea with Mitchell and nearly got converted! B to supper to eat my pork chops - we snarked a bit. ------
1944: Lovely day. Helped slightly and wrote letter in morning, then took Ron to post. B rang up after dinner to say she couldn't get back, then later to say she was coming, and a 3rd time to say it was imposs so I slept again with H [Hilda] and was happy. Musical evening once again.

1940: Well, we get through the days somehow, and the weekends must come! When will this blighted war end? Called for Marjorie Webber and played tennis in evening with her and Francis Drake. Great fun, but the courts! ------
1941: Still wet - as usual. Took C.D. [country dancing] and P.T. [physical training] between showers. Managed to dance outside in evening. Miss Waite came and we learnt 'Hull's Victory' which is a lovely dance. ------
1942: H [Hilda] much sweeter and more communicative. We are doing the last week together and it should be fun. altho' we've got Baber too. Poured all day. Midhurst Hostel can't take us, so 'phoned Bear and cancelled weekend - beastly shame. Moved rooms. I'm in a music room. Visited chiropodist. Bought my 1st record - Bach's Air and Gavotte. ------
1943: Gorgeous hot, sunny day. Went into Esher in morning with Mrs. G. Went to Oxshot woods in afternoon with David aged 8, and Doris. David is a lovely chap. Hope his namesake will be similar. ------
1944: H brought breakfast and we arrived at school in time. Felt peaceful all day. Collected my things from her. Did nothing in evening.
