1940: Cold worse. Had a lousy night sweating like mad. Got to school somehow and survived the day. My class really behaved well and were quite considerate of my voice. Messed about with evacuation plans most of the day. ------
1941: Went to Minehead on the early train. Walked up North Hill, explored town - had STEAK and chips for lunch! Went on coach trip to Croydon Hill and round past Dunkery Beacon to Bossington for tea - got there at last! Were not impressed with hotel there, but the village is gorgeous. Must go there again. Threw stones on beach! ------
1942: Went to High Mass at Anglo-Catholic church - was interested but not inspired. Curate to tea. Left on 6:50 and arrived home at 10. Quite a jolly weekend - better than I expected. ------
1943: Got breakfast and was at school early! Lessons went well and I felt full of bounce. Like my digs and my weekend still makes me feel joyous. B came to supper and we had vege and bacon as the chops were bad! Coralie gave us some pud and we were bloated. ------
1944: Sewed at B's but have decided that my frock is all wrong - yah. There's no mental rest at home at all - I might just as well not have a holiday - am always on edge and peeved. Wish I could get a change and some peace.

1940: Very hot. Stayed in bed till 12:30 feeling rotten with cold. Hilda came and went to bank for me. We were on duty at school from 1-2pm and registered 1 child! Dinner at 3. Went to library. Went for a walk round Enfield with Lucy in evening. ------
1941: Sea mist at first, so retired from the beach, came indoors, picked up a paper and was confronted with clothes rationing. Blimey, what next? Broiling rest of say, we hiked over fields to Carhampton, thro' Dunster Deer Park, had tea in a lovely old place. Saw priory gardens and yarn market - lovely place altogether. ------
1942: School LOUSY. A new H.M.I. [His Majesty's Inspectors of Schools] walked in and was fiendish. B [Beryl] and I went to Southgate to a country dance class in evening. Quite good fun, but not as jolly as Hemyock. ------
1943: Wet. Choir after school - 6 of us, with some Higher Grade Girls and cook, in my room. Went to supper with H [Hilda] - others out at show. Cleaned silver, and watched her make luscious supper dish. Sang after - I enjoyed the evening muchly. ------
1944: Shopped in morning, slept in afternoon and then Ma and I went to see 'His Butler's Sister' - quite a good Deanna [Durbin]. Pa wouldn't come as Ma didn't like me paying for both of them and they had a row about it earlier in the week.
